India and China
India and china relationship have a history of chronic strife that India would like to forget but which China would not let us forget. Way back in 1950, after the Communist Revolution, the US offered China's UN Security seat to India. Pt. Nehru, India's first prime minister turned down the offer on the advice of USSR lest China should be offended. Within a year, the process of annexation of Tibet by China began. What is more, today China is stoutly opposing India's inclusion in the UN Security council. Our first Prime Minister, Nehru, visited China on October 1954 and he was overwhelmed with the amazing reception he got on his first visit. The doctrine of panchsheel ( Five Principle of coexistence) was established. Yet the ties between the two became strained with boarder skirmishes and discovery of Chinese road in Aksai Chin.
In 1959, Dalai Lama, fled to Tibet and was granted political asylum by India. In 1960, the conflict between the two countries came into open. When Chinese Prime Minister, Zhou Enlai visited India, India rejected the Chinese claim over Arunachal Pradesh. In 1962, Chinese troops entered deep into India with orders to conquer. Within fifteen years of Independence India experienced two wars, one with Pakistan and the other with China. Both these wars were designed to serve some purposes and they have proved their psychological purpose successfully.
China still has not given up its claim on Arunachal Pradesh. China helped Pakistan to achieve nuclear status in the 1990's. In return, Pakistan acknowledged China's suzerainty over Aksai Chin. China is helping Bangladesh to develop its Missile System. Its closeness to Nepal and the rise of Maoism there do not bode well for India. China has bought Coco Island from Burma in the vicinity of India. China has openly come out claiming 2.1 sq km finger area as the Northern most tip of Sikkim, almost a settled issue for India. After 71 years of Independence, India is as pathetic a country as it was in 1962. It was squarely proved when China entered our territory as will and painted it red.
Will New Delhi ever respond to Beijing ? When our media and few interested optimists fix a particular year for India emerging as a super power, they must be knowing that the question of super power can be settled among other things on the sweet will of China. China is being the neighbor of ours sfor centuries understands our defeatist mind set. In every field we have to do much of catching up with the Dragon.
